ARROYO OVERLOOK

Pasadena, CA

Our Clients for this project had seen an extensive remodel and addition that we completed for a neighbor and approached us to upgrade the existing house and add a bedroom suite. A single story addition was clearly the most economical and consistent with the existing house. The west side of the house presented the only viable location of sufficient size (beyond Zoning Code required setbacks). We removed the exterior wall of the existing north south oriented Master Bedroom, added a 14’ wide enclosure and 8’ wide terrace to the 35’ long exposed west face and divided this larger enclosure into two bedrooms with en suite bathrooms and adjacent exterior shaded terraces enjoying spectacular unobstructed western views over the arroyo.

Ipe (hardwood) was used to create cabinetry (for exterior entertainment uses) and exterior wall and deck finishes on two sides of the new addition, providing a rich textured surface that breathes and drains. These panels were prefabricated (with all fixing hardware concealed) and are fully demountable for access and maintenance. Interiors are suffused with natural light from skylights and generous wall glazing. Lighting levels can be controlled by motorized shades and indirect lighting that washes walls and skylight shafts, allowing the user to fine tune the ambience. Interior installations include custom “built in” furniture and cabinetry discretely integrating display, storage, audio visual equipment and “clean burning” (ethanol and gas) fire features.
